Biosphere Isle of Man was delighted to attend the 46th Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) Silver Lapwing Awards at Ballagawne Farm, celebrating farmers across the British Isles who champion wildlife and sustainability alongside food production.
Held on Wednesday 18th June, the decision to hold the prestigious awards on the Isle of Man followed Ballagawne Farm’s success in 2024, showcasing how the Cooil family’s dairy farm embodies Biosphere values. From reducing fertiliser by 30%, to encouraging dung beetles and planting diverse swards, the Cooils’ commitment to supporting wildlife and sustainability highlights the synergy between farming and conservation.

With cover crops, a new orchard, and thriving populations of Great Crested Newts, Andrew’s farm reflects the award’s ethos: balancing productivity with environmental stewardship.
The ceremony also awarded a lifetime achievement award to Nicholas Watts MBE of Vine House Farm, honouring decades of dedication to conservation-friendly farming and his particular passion for supporting birdlife, both on the farm itself and through the production of high quality bird seed.
