Celebration of Language Gets off to Great Start

Blein ny Gaelgey, or Year of the Manx Language, has begun with energy and imagination, setting the scene for the 2026 celebration of Manx Gaelic across the Island.

Blein ny Gaelgey, or Year of the Manx Language, has begun with energy and imagination, setting the scene for the 2026 celebration of Manx Gaelic across the Island.

Since the start of the year, communities have come together to explore traditions, creativity, and cultural heritage through the language that has shaped our history, our landscapes, our place names, and our shared identity.

January’s activities included celebrating old Manx Christmas traditions and the release of new Manx language songs. The month closed with Oie’ll Vreeshey celebrations, as well as the launch of local music group Biskee Brisht’s bilingual album in Laxey. These events are a brilliant reminder that the language is actively shaping contemporary culture through music, dancing, and songs.

February brings even more opportunities for people to get involved, with events suited to all ages and levels of Manx. Many events are free, informal and designed to welcome newcomers, making this an ideal moment to explore the language in a friendly and accessible.

As a UNESCO Biosphere, Manx Gaelic is a fundamental part of our designation and a crucial thread connecting people to place. Many of our hills, glens, farms, buildings and roads are named in Manx; the language encodes stories of the natural world, seasonal rhythms, and subtly highlights the ways communities once lived closely with their environment.

Engaging with Manx on any level opens a doorway in to understanding how deeply culture and landscape are intertwined. The Year of the Manx Language offers the chance to reconnect with that sense of belonging and identity, through various creative, community and academic strands. And importantly, you do not need to speak Manx to take part! Whether you are learning your first phrase or simply enjoying the richness Manx brings to the Island, this is the year to experience the language as a living, breathing part of our Biosphere.

Full and regularly updated event listings are available here, where you can also find information for organising your own Manx language activities - including guidance on planning and funding opportunities.
