The Joey Dunlop Foundation is a well-known local charity who offer help and support to disabled people and those with mobility issues, with a site at Braddan Bridge House that provides accommodation for disabled people.
At Braddan Bridge House guests are encouraged to recycle, with information readily available that makes it clear as to what can be recycled and boxes are provided to make it as easy as possible. Each apartment is fitted with sensor lights which helps to reduce energy consumption and cost. There is a reduced use of chemicals whenever possible during the cleaning of the apartments and surrounding areas.
Guests are encouraged to shop local and buy from Manx producers and businesses in a bid to contribute to the economy in a sustainable way. Guests are provided with a welcome pack which contains local produce to enjoy and showcases what is available in the Island. There is also a tourist information centre operated by the Joey Dunlop Foundation that provides guests with a range of options for days out, activities and restaurants within the local community.
The disabled facilities are second to none at Braddan Bridge House and it is the Foundation’s mission to make the Isle of Man accessible to those with mobility issues and disabilities. Despite the Joey Dunlop name being synonymous with motor racing it doesn’t discount the fact that the Island is a beautiful place and the Foundation aims to showcase it and provide as much information as possible to guests.
The Joey Dunlop Foundation have worked with Manx Wildlife Trust to create a wildlife habitat which was previously waste land and have also hosted workshops with younger guests in collaboration with MWT, making bug hotels and other activities to raise awareness of and engagement with our environment.
The Joey Dunlop Foundation recognise how important community engagement is and hold an annual open day to enable other charities, organisations and individuals to see first-hand what happens at the Foundation and they offer respite care for locals as well as people who may need to make their own homes more accessible, working closely with care providers and Manx Care. The Foundation also promote and support the Manx Food Bank, asking visitors to donate unopened food supplies to the charity through an on-site donation point.
