IOMFSA colleagues make positive contribution to environment

Colleagues in the Isle of Man Financial Services Authority (IOMFSA) are making a positive contribution to the environment.

The workforce of the IOMFSA staged a screening of A Plastic Ocean, an award-winning documentary film about the effect plastic has on our seas.

They recycle materials used at the IOMFSA office, Finch Hill House, Buck’s Road, Douglas, and have a rota for collecting Isle of Man Creamery plant-based milk cartons and taking them to amenity sites for transportation to a recycling plant in the UK, where they are turned into industrial tubing.

Single-use plastic drinking cups in IOMFSA kitchens have been replaced with multi-use cups.

The colleagues pick litter around their office and have visited facilities such as the energy from waste plant, Douglas Corporation’s waste recycling centre (pictured) and Manx Utilities’ power station.

At Christmas, the IOMFSA held a ‘Green Advent’ initiative – sending colleagues ideas throughout December for environmentally friendly gifting, wrapping and celebrations.

The office also held a month-long wildlife challenge, in which staff were encouraged to do 30 small things for wildlife.

Challenges included leaving lawns unmowed to provide for wildflowers to grow and seed and provide nectar; making an insect hotel, feeding birds and freeing creepy crawlies found at home.

Staff also attended a talk by the UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man Project Officer.

Roxanne Oldham, IOMFSA’s Head of Policy and Authorisations, said:‘A small number of individuals make up our environmental team, but all members of staff and their families have been involved in activities that have taken place.

‘This isn’t a one-off initiative and activities will continue, as this is a very important topic to us all.’
