Isle of Man Home of Rest for Old Horses

The Isle of Man Home of Rest for Old Horses is a charity which takes in horses at the end of their working lives to care for them when their owners no longer can.

It is working towards having renewable energy available on the estate and is undertaking assessment for the installation of solar panels. It has insulated its buildings and replaced old windows with PVC double glazing to reduce its energy consumption.

As far as possible, The Isle of Man Home of Rest for Old Horses tries to source products used on the estate from local businesses. This helps develop our Island’s economy by supporting local as well as reducing the carbon footprint as products have not travelled from afar, using less energy/fossil fuels.

The estate has themed weekends in the plans for the upcoming year to showcase Manx heritage and culture alongside the estate’s own history and heritage.

The natural environment around the estate is thoughtfully looked after, with wildflower meadows, bird boxes across all wooded areas and insect-friendly areas. Additionally, The Isle of Man Home of Rest for Old Horses consciously tries to re-use, recycle, up-cycle, and repurpose materials to reduce their waste.

The Isle of Man Home of Rest for Old Horses hosts the Isle of Man prisoners’ rehabilitation programme, with inmates due for parole, socialising and working within the community to get reacquainted.

It plans to allocate quiet times for more vulnerable members of the public to visit, creating a quieter and more relaxing experience for them to view the horses. Another great event currently in the planning stages is local producer markets to be hosted regularly at the estate.
