The Ellan Vannin Maritime Centre (EVMC) is a proposed development in Ramsey. EVMC have developed a Sustainability Plan, which includes marine ecosystems and recreational boating practices.
The construction of the marina breakwater aims to create a new marine habitat, enhanced through technology from Ccell Limited to produce natural coral but artificially. EVMC also plans to investigate the collection, propagation, and planting of seagrass, aided by the design of the marina structure itself which will capture natural, waterborne seeds using the techniques developed by the Ocean Conservation on their seagrass projects in Plymouth
Plans for recreational boating facilities include fast charging infrastructure for electric vessels and, in conjunction with other stakeholders, EVMC plans to propagate oysters and mussels under pontoons, to contribute to the restoration of local stocks.
EVMC is a founding member of the Celtic and Viking Corridor Project, linking marine tourism from the Canaries to the Arctic Circle, and the centre hopes to enhance local events by adding a maritime dimension.
An Education and Awareness Centre is planned onshore, which could provide research, educational, conference facilities, and sailing programmes, as well as hosting community events to support awareness of the island’s marine environmental heritage. EVMC intends to showcase the Isle of Man’s food and agricultural produce through its restaurants and bars.
Through these initiatives, EVMC aims to support marine biodiversity, community engagement, cultural heritage, and local economic activity.
