Supporters of the Curraghs Wildlife Park (SCWP) is a registered charity that provides practical support and enhancements for the Isle of Man Government-run facility.
SCWP activities ‘make a difference for the Curraghs Wildlife Park’s animals and visitors’.
The park is an important amenity for residents and visitors to the Isle of Man and SCWP’s work helps improve the park and ensure users have an enjoyable visit and return.
SCWP runs work parties for businesses that visit the park for team-building and corporate social responsibility activities, allowing them to meet new people, learn new skills and contribute to a major community asset.
Part of the park is within the Ballaugh Curragh Area of Special Scientific Interest and Wetland of International Importance. Habitat management work undertaken by SCWP and visiting work groups includes removal of invasive species, clearing ditches and opening up waterways. This work helps to maintain the area’s biodiversity.
Other tasks include creating accommodation for animals and laying and repairing paths.
SCWP created the Curragh Nature Trail with funding from Manx Lottery Trust and Zurich International. The trail provides varied opportunities for visitors to find out about the area’s natural history and heritage and includes recordings explaining past farming practices in the curragh, a poem about the area and information boards on its history and wildlife.
The Supporters advocate for the use of solar panels within the park and the Talking Bench located in the nature trail is solar powered.
SCWP holds its own events, including during Manx Wildlife Week, and is developing new community related projects.
Many Supporters also volunteer at the park, delivering talks and presentations on the park’s conservation work and the environmental importance of the area.
