The Junior Achievement Isle of Man office has been making changes to run more sustainably. They have changed all lights to LED, are on the way to being paperless, and have bought in-house cutlery to avoid using single-use plastics.
As part of the worldwide Junior Achievement network, the charity runs a wide range of programmes within primary and secondary schools designed to help children and young people to increase their self-esteem and confidence, transfer the skills learnt in education into their life once they finish school, understand how the world of business works, learn how to do business ethically and sustainably, and develop their entrepreneurial skills, which benefits our island community.
Junior Achievement incentivises students to think sustainably, and the results are shown in the Company Programme. Each year, the students develop a company in which most of their ideas are usually related to solving environmental problems. For example, this year (2022), the team representing the Isle of Man in the European level competition developed a product to reduce the pollution caused by single-use plastic.
The charity gets as much involved in the community and island-wide events as possible and are present on Tynwald day and the agricultural shows. The tourist challenge is a project that invites the students to think about our island and how to promote it.
