Braddan Commissioners were UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man's first local authority partner.
In 2019, the Commissioners become the first local authority on the Isle of Man to declare a climate emergency. Their Climate Change Report can be found on their website.
Braddan Commissioners are now based at their new community centre, The Roundhouse.
The building has the largest solar array on a public building in the Isle of Man, with 124 solar panels. Other energy efficient features include movement-sensitive lighting, and a heat recovery system. The nursery features underfloor heating and an air source heat pump. There are 6 electric vehicle charging points at the front of the building. Recycling happens throughout the building for as much of the waste generated as possible.
The Roundhouse has a space in the entrance for community use, a village green, sensory garden and walking track and many features that make the building and facilities fully accessible.
Both the Commissioners’ and The Roundhouse websites meet new Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. The sites allow residents to sign up to email newsletters, reducing the amount of printing required and allowing the board to communicate more efficiently.
The Commissioners have provided Braddan households with kerbside recycling since 2007.
Energy efficient LED lighting is used for new street lighting, with existing lights being changed over when possible.
Braddan follows the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture’s hedge-cutting guidelines and keeps hedge cutting to a minimum. Each year, pictorial flower meadows are planted at the Strang, Cronk Grianagh Park and the Isle of Man Business Park, providing attractive displays and food source for pollinators.
In 2021, the Commissioners completed the construction of 30 apartments in Union Mills called Mullen Doway, using electricity for powering heating and hot water instead of gas, a heat recovery system, solar panels for lighting communal areas and electric vehicle charging points.
The Commissioners are improving the thermal efficiency of social housing properties at Jubilee and Coronation Terraces through the replacement of roofs, windows and doors in 2024.
A scheme to replace gas boilers in bungalows in Millennium Close, Snugborough with air source heat pumps is being progressed.
Coronation Community Garden provides a space with raised beds for the community to come together and grow fruit and veg and socialise. Volunteers are always welcome. The Commissioners have planted fruit and nut trees in Cronk Grianagh Park and Ballafletcher Farm Road for the community to make use of.
As part of its community efforts, it provides annual contributions for Christmas parties for schools, youth groups and community organisations.
The Commissioners employ a Community Warden to advise and educate people about fly tipping/littering/dog faeces, etc.
Braddan celebrates famous parishioner Archibald Knox, a celebrated artist and designer in the Art Nouveau period of British Arts and Crafts Celtic design, basing their logo on one of his designs.
