The 7th University College Isle of Man (UCM) Annual Research Festival is taking place on 16–17 October 2025 at the Villa Marina, Douglas. Hosted by UCM in partnership with Biosphere Isle of Man, the festival showcases the crucial role of research in understanding and shaping a sustainable future.
This year’s theme, ‘Our Biosphere’, places the spotlight on the island as both a subject of study and a model for global environmental cooperation. The festival brings together academics, students, independent researchers, and professionals to explore how knowledge can drive positive change in areas including biodiversity, climate action, health, culture, and sustainable development.
The event begins with an official opening and keynote lecture on Thursday evening, followed by a full day of presentations and workshops on Friday. Topics range from eDNA river surveys and low carbon heating to regenerative economies, dark skies, and the role of local food in community identity.
One exciting topic is the exploration of how our Biosphere status can influence the Island’s global identity, featuring local research on place branding, sustainability partnerships, and community well-being.
The festival not only offers opportunities to hear cutting-edge research but also strengthens links between institutions, communities, and businesses - vital for any community striving for long-term sustainability.
By facilitating collaboration between on- and off-Island researchers, it reinforces the Island’s position as a hub of innovation, curiosity, and environmental stewardship.
Attendance is free but booking is essential via Eventbrite – see here for the full itinerary, registration and to book your tickets.
