SUEZ Recycling and Recovery Ltd hold the operations and maintenance contract for the Energy from Waste facility. It is responsible for the safe operation and effective upkeep of the facility which is key for the Isle of Man's waste management strategy. From the waste incineration process, the facility can generate up to 10% of the Island’s electricity.
A sustainability action plan was created in 2021 which focuses on reducing the site’s carbon footprint, improving biodiversity and giving back to the community. It brings forward 10 principles that are collated to form the plan and they are:
1. Avoid unnecessary single-use items or packaging
2. Reduce paper use
3. Lower utility use
4. Reuse
5. Recycle
6. Purchase Sustainably
7. Travel Smarter
8. Connect with our community
9. Take action for nature
10. Everyone on site plays their part
As a result of the sustainability action plan, SUEZ have completed various actions around their site to support natural resources, working closely with the Manx Woodland Trust and Manx Birdlife to complete actions in line with supporting wildlife in the area.
SUEZ promote the Isle of Man and everything it has to offer through their company. Contractors, management and clients often take time out of their working day to explore the beauty of the Isle of Man and support the community as best they can.
SUEZ have engaged with schools and social groups to conduct multiple tours throughout the year and have worked with many charities including Beach Buddies, Manx Birdlife and The Manx Woodland Trust to help support their goals. They have also ran volunteer days, for example some of the team painted the inside of the Tommy Clucas Hall in Peel.
